Essential Questions:
How does geography shape human culture, and how does human culture shape geography?
How can geography help me understand the world, and my place in it?
Purpose and Relevance:
When students understand how geography influences human culture, they can better appreciate how human culture is developed. This understanding will allow students to be more empathetic and tolerant of cultures unlike their own while giving them a deeper awareness of their culture and how it is/was formed. Furthermore, comprehending how humans and their culture effect the geography/environment gives students a much more profound insight in approaching current environmental issues. This knowledge, on the whole, fosters a greater sense of self and community and enhances the student’s ability to affect positive change in their own lives and the world.
Literacy Focus:
Reading and Media Literacy:Mr. Abel-Pype's classes have a central literacy focus. To begin, students must be able to read and comprehend the text literally. Most importantly, however, students must be able to read beyond what the text says in front of them and contextualize deeper meanings such as author's purpose, potential biases, and tone. This is known in Mr. Abel-Pype's class as "reading the blank spaces" meaning we must go deeper and read beyond what the text literally says. Furthermore, because we understand that all texts have bias, we read, discuss, and interpret multiple texts to get a clearer picture of events. Finally, we practice these skills in the 21st Century world through various texts including the modern media.
Writing:
Students must be able to clearly communicate their understandings through a wide variety of writing techniques. Therefore, students work intensely on crafting a variety of writing pieces.
Technological Literacy:
In the 21st century world, students must improve their knowledge and skills with modern technological tools. So, students are tasked to use multiple online tools and software to communicate and challenge their own, and others', views and ideas.
Arts Integration:
Students will be expected to demonstrate their learning through a variety of mediums that allow them to be creative while illustrating their understanding of geographic concepts.
